KOLO 8 News Now – Profiling the New Pups on the Block: Local Fresh Dog Food Company Good Pup Food Co
Waldron and Burnham co-own Good Pup Food Co., which was born out of an epiphany. Already making homemade food for his dog with digestive issues, Waldron realized he should do this full time.
“I just decided to go all in with it and design a way more complete recipe then I was already making. Pretty soon I had a viable product. I brought it to Jon and he was excited right away because he had an elderly dog who had a ton of issues at the end of her life,” recalls Waldron.
Because it’s human grade, most of the ingredients are local, hand-picked, and hand made in small batches.
“We can’t hide behind forming our food into a pellet, what you see is what you get,” said Waldron.
Since I’m sure you’re already thinking it, of course I had to ask if they’ve tried the food themselves.
“I sneak bites of meat all time,” Waldron said. Burnham, the vegetarian, adds: “We also had a friend of ours eat some as well and he gave us the thumbs up.”
Waldron and Burnham spent a lot of time researching their recipe and, they say, they landed on a good ratio between meat, veggies, and carbohydrates. The blend equates to is 55 to 60% percent meat, 25% veggies, and 20% carbs.
Recent studies show that some brands of kibble can negatively impact your dog’s health because it can be made with preservatives, is extruded at high temperatures, contains little moisture, has excess carbohydrates, and sometimes low-quality ingredients. Burnham says that some companies are even dishonest about the ingredients in general.
