USEFUL PHRASES (2014)

This series of still images takes a DIY YouTube Dutch-for-Beginners video and treats it with a homemade montage of details extracted from my new environment as an artist-in-residence in Amsterdam. For this piece I have limited myself to the hamster route I make every day while walking with my dog, fantasising about ringing a buzzer and talking to someone. Within my narrow limitations I can select a variety of newness and reduce it to the available patterns, textures and sounds indigenous to the city of Amsterdam. This is a response to some of the immediate differences experienced by a foreign person attempting to bring order to chaos, and then vice versa, in a new place where my experience and contribution seem merely confined to a surface.
