Do You Want to Make Your Cat Worm Free
The intestinal worms that infect cats are roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms. While it may not always be easy to spot the signs that your cat may have worms, some of the telltale signs are weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, irritation around the anus, and failure to thrive.
It is recommended that cats and kittens should be taken to the vet if any of these signs are noticed to have them checked for worms. If your cat is found to have worms, it is recommended to start a deworming treatment in consultation with your vet immediately.
There are many different worming products available in the market today. Some of the popular Dewormers for cats are Drontal, Milbemax, Profender, and Droncit. Among these, some are available as tablets and others as spot on.
In this article, we will discuss all four products in detail to understand which of these might be most suited for your pet.
Among the most widely used and recommended broad-spectrum Dewormers, Drontal for cats is an alumna tablet. It controls all gastrointestinal worms which include roundworm, tapeworm, and hookworm. To ensure that your pet is protected, it is recommended to treat kittens at 6, 8, and 12 weeks, and then at 3-month intervals. An adult cat should be treated every 3 months. Drontal is available in the form of coated tablets and can be administered easily by mixing it with food or may be given directly.
Milbemax for Cats is also available in the form of a tablet. A multispectrum dewormer, it is recommended for the treatment and control of roundworms, hookworms, and cestodes and also helps in the prevention of heartworm disease. The dose is based on the body weight of cats and it is usually administered orally as a single dose.
It is advised that the tablets should be taken with or after food as this ensures maximum protection against heartworm disease. Bear in mind that this product cannot be administered to cats less than 6 weeks of age or weighing less than 0.5kg.
For those who prefer to use a spot-on treatment for worms, Profender is recommended. It is effective against all stages of roundworms and hookworms in cats (L4, immature, and adult stages) and adult stages of cat tapeworms. Profender for Cats can be used on kittens from 8 weeks of age and weighing more than 0.5kg.
Bear in mind that this product is for external use only and care should be taken while administering it especially if there is more than one cat in the house. It is important to ensure that the pet does not lick the treated area while it is wet.
Another quite effective dewormer is Droncit for Cats. It is used for the treatment of adult tapeworms and is effective against both immature and mature forms of adult tapeworms in cats. It is in the form of a tablet and is given directly or can be mixed with food.
As you can see, there are several deworming products available today and hopefully this information will help you keep your cat healthy and happy.
